Custom carpentry and built-ins in Cary, NC
Custom carpentry is the fastest way to make a builder-grade house feel like it was designed for you. HomePro Remodeling builds and installs finish carpentry across Cary, Apex, Holly Springs, Fuquay-Varina and Raleigh: built-in bookcases and media walls, crown molding and trim packages, wainscoting and board-and-batten, fireplace surrounds, mudroom lockers, laundry cabinetry and custom closets. Everything is measured, cut and fitted on site by Chris Muragas, a second-generation carpenter with nearly 20 years of experience, so it fits your walls, not a catalog.
What we build
- Built-in bookcases, media walls and window seats. The most requested project in Cary’s 1990s and 2000s two-story homes: flanking the fireplace with floor-to-ceiling built-ins, turning a flex room into a real office, or adding a window seat with storage underneath. Read are custom built-ins worth it? for what to expect.
- Crown molding, baseboard and trim upgrades. Replace 3-inch builder trim with 5¼-inch baseboard and stacked crown and a room reads as custom. We do whole-house trim packages and single rooms, and we match existing profiles when you are only doing part of the house.
- Wainscoting, board-and-batten and shiplap accent walls. Dining rooms, entries, stair walls and bedrooms, laid out to the room’s proportions so the panels land evenly at doors, windows and outlets.
- Fireplace surrounds and mantels. New mantels, full surrounds with paneling to the ceiling, and tile or stone facing, built to the fireplace manufacturer’s clearance requirements.
- Mudroom and laundry room cabinetry. Lockers, bench seating with cubbies, hooks and shelving, and laundry cabinets with a folding counter, sized to the space you actually have by the garage door.
- Custom closets and pantry systems. Built-in shelving, drawers and hanging sections in wood, not wire, laid out around what you own.
- Flooring installation. Hardwood, engineered wood and luxury vinyl plank, including transitions and new shoe molding so the floor finishes clean at every wall.
Why built-ins from a carpenter beat store-bought
See our custom built-ins page for the full list of what we build and how.
They fit the room. Store-bought units leave gaps at the wall and a dead space at the ceiling. We scribe every panel to your wall and build to your ceiling height, which in Cary homes ranges from 8 feet to 10 feet on the main floor, so the unit looks like it was part of the house.
The right material for the finish. Painted built-ins are built from paint-grade poplar and MDF panels that stay flat and take paint cleanly; stained work is built from the hardwood you choose. Either way the shelves are sized so they do not sag under books.
Your hardware, your layout. Adjustable shelving, drawers on soft-close slides, doors on concealed hinges, cable pass-throughs for the TV, and lighting if you want it, all decided with you before the first cut.
How a carpentry project works
- On-site consultation and measurements. Free. Chris looks at the wall, the floor, the ceiling line and what is behind the drywall, and talks through the design with you.
- Drawing and written quote. You get a sketch of the piece and an itemized quote before any work starts.
- Build and install. Most built-ins and trim projects take a few working days on site. Materials are cut and fitted in place, and the work area is cleaned up every day.
- Finish and walkthrough. Caulk, fill, sand and paint or stain, then a walkthrough together before we call it done.
Carpentry questions we hear most
Do you build the cabinets yourself or buy them?
Built-ins, trim, mantels, wainscoting and mudroom pieces are built and fitted on site. For kitchen and bath cabinet boxes we install manufactured all-wood cabinetry and trim it out on site. We will tell you which approach fits your project and budget.
Painted or stained?
Either. Most built-ins and trim in Cary homes are painted to match the existing trim color. For stained pieces we build from the hardwood you choose and finish it to match your floors or existing cabinetry.
Can you match my existing trim profile?
Yes. We match standard profiles from stock and can have an unusual profile milled so a new room’s trim matches the rest of the house.
Do I need a permit for built-ins or trim in Cary?
No. Cosmetic interior carpentry does not require a permit. Adding an electrical circuit for lighting or outlets inside a built-in does, and HomePro pulls that permit through your town’s inspections office.
How long does it take?
Single-room trim or a pair of fireplace built-ins is usually a few working days on site, plus finishing. We give you a schedule with the quote.
Do you take small jobs, like crown molding in one room?
Yes. Smaller carpentry projects are a good fit for the way HomePro works, and they are often how a client first meets Chris. Tell us what you have in mind.
